Practice! Ok that's it! Thanks for reading my blog! Just kidding! But yeah, practice! It wouldn't definitely make you "perfect" but it will make you better and better until you've reached your desired result or be "pro" as they say.
That was one of the teachings that got stuck with me on our last meeting at the Certified Voice Artist Program. Quick recap, well, I joined a voice artist online certification program held by Creativoices Productions headed by the one and only Voice Master of the Philippines, Mr. Pocholo De Leon Gonzales. So last week, we were taught about tips and techniques on how to create different kinds of voices as well as how to take care of it(our voices) as well.
This week, we were taught about how to improve the skills that we learned even further. So how do we do it? Simple. Just practice. Practice, practice, practice. Like what they always say. It is, and always will be that way. Whatever you do. Anything can be mastered through patience, resilience and repetition.
So how do voice artist practice and hone their crafts? Simple. Recording themselves. In the voice industry, you will not always have a director or critic by your side judging your work or voice. So you yourself will most likely be your best critic. When doing a playback after your practice recordings, you'll always need to ask yourself if what you've accomplished met "your" standards. If not, well of course, do it again until you've achieved that satisfaction within yourself.
Wait, I know what you're thinking. What if my standard is low, poor or is not up to par with the "pros"? Well, the key to raising that standard of yours is by consistently listening to existing pieces done by the pros themselves. Learn how to train your ear and get used to how things should suppose to sound, be said, articulated, expressed etc. If you think that you've improved your "standard" then try listening to all of your recordings again and give yourself a feedback on what should've been done better and redo your recordings. Rinse and repeat until satisfied. Also, do this consistently. Don't stick to one script and call it done. Explore and experiment.
Another thing that we learned last meeting was about building your online presence. In this day and age, almost everything is done online, on the internet. So it would be extremely wise to take advantage of and use it to market your talents and skills.
Even if you have the most iconic, golden and/or most beautiful sounding voice in the world but nobody knows you or searches for you, it would mean nothing. So in order for us, voice artists, to be known, we'll need to create profiles or accounts that will tell the world"I am a voice artist". Start by creating a social page. Any social media site will do but if you can have a presence to all? Why not? Then create a simple website(for now). Your social media will most likely be used for networking and marketing. While your website will be mostly used to showcase your portfolio to your future clients. You'll also look more professional and committed to your work if you have your own website.
Next one will be registering to online jobs platform. This is where you'll meet your potential clients as well as where they can search for you. Of course, you should be looking for platforms that are leaning more towards doing voice projects than anything else.
So once all of these are set, it's time to market yourself and promote talent! How? Remember those practice recordings? Now is the time to use them! Post them to your social media and website so people may see and enjoy them. Who knows you might just gain your first client just by posting those practice files online. So you need it to be in its most presentable form! And how do we have it like that? Again, practice!
So that concludes my blog for our 3rd week meeting on the Certified Voice Artist Program! Hope you understood and learn something from this! Thanks for reading!
